Broos fumes: Zwane out of Canada clash as SAFA appeal fails, Mokoena cleared
Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has been left absolutely furious after the South African Football Association’s (SAFA) official appeal against Themba Zwane’s draconian three-match ban was flatly rejected.
The catastrophic decision means Zwane — widely regarded as one of Bafana Bafana’s most vital creative engines — is officially barred from taking part in the upcoming World Cup last-32 knockout clash against powerhouse Canada.
In a public statement, SAFA did not mince their words, blasting the governing body’s disciplinary committee.
“We are disappointed with the outcome of our appeal because we strongly believe that the punishment is far harsher than the offense that Themba is said to have committed,” SAFA stated.
Broos made zero attempt to hide his blistering frustration when addressing the media, openly questioning the integrity and consistency of the tournament’s officiating.
“Teboho [Mokoena] is surely there against Canada, but Themba no — they didn’t accept our appeal, which is strange,” a visibly irritated Broos declared.
“What he did was certainly not deserving of a three-game sanction. Certainly not.”
The veteran Belgian tactician went a step further, suggesting a double standard is at play at the global showpiece.
“I saw other things on the pitch where they don’t even go to VAR to change decisions,” Broos snapped, his anger barely concealed.
While the loss of Zwane deals a massive tactical blow to South Africa’s knockout ambitions, Broos did deliver one massive boost for the nation, confirming that midfield powerhouse Teboho Mokoena has been cleared and will be available to face the Canadians.
