Floyd Shivambu Takes Mayibuye Campaign to Kutama as Party Targets Limpopo Municipalities
MAKHADO: The political contest in Limpopo is gathering momentum, with Afrika Mayibuye Movement president Floyd Shivambu leading a high profile delegation to the Kutama Traditional Authority in Ha-Kutama as the newly established party steps up its campaign ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections.
Shivambu is meeting Vho Thovhele Kutama before addressing members of the community and introducing Mayibuye’s mayoral candidate for the Makhado Local Municipality.
The visit is part of a broader campaign to build the party’s structures and expand its political footprint across Limpopo, with particular attention on the Vhembe and Mopani districts.
The 2026 Local Government Elections are scheduled for 4 November, and political parties are already intensifying their mobilisation efforts across the country.
For Mayibuye, however, Limpopo has emerged as a central battleground.
Shivambu Bets on Limpopo
Shivambu has previously described Limpopo as one of the party’s strongest areas of support, expressing confidence that Mayibuye could win municipalities across Vhembe, Mopani, Capricorn, Sekhukhune and Waterberg.
That confidence is now being tested on the ground.
The party has increased its engagement with communities and traditional leadership structures, seeking to turn its growing political visibility into an organised electoral campaign.
The Kutama visit forms part of that strategy.
Rather than limiting its campaign to conventional political rallies, Mayibuye has increasingly sought direct engagement with traditional leaders and communities in areas where traditional authority remains an important part of local political and social life.
Mayibuye Expands Its Limpopo Footprint
The latest campaign activity follows a similar engagement in Mopani.
In July, Shivambu led a Mayibuye delegation to the Balobedu Kingdom as the movement sought to strengthen its relationship with traditional leadership and communities ahead of the municipal elections.
The party has also brought prominent local figures into its campaign machinery.
Popular musician and former politician Papa Penny joined Mayibuye and was tasked with leading the party’s campaign in the Greater Giyani Municipality.
His involvement has added another high profile name to Mayibuye’s campaign as the movement attempts to build support in Mopani.
The Real Test Comes on Election Day
Mayibuye’s increasing activity in Vhembe and Mopani is likely to put both districts under greater political scrutiny as the November elections approach.
But visibility alone will not determine whether the new movement can disrupt the existing political order.
The bigger challenge will be converting public engagements and political mobilisation into votes, functioning ward structures and enough support to gain control of municipalities.
That is where the party’s Limpopo campaign will face its toughest test.
For Shivambu, the Kutama visit is therefore about more than introducing a mayoral candidate.
It forms part of a broader attempt to establish Mayibuye as a serious political force in Limpopo and position the movement to challenge established parties for control of local government.
With election day approaching, the question is no longer whether Mayibuye intends to make an impact in Limpopo.
The question is whether its growing campaign presence can translate into electoral power.
