Experienced youth coach Thabo Senong hails importance of Engen Knockout Challenge

The highly anticipated 2026 Engen Knockout Challenge officially kicks off in Cape Town this Friday morning, with revered tactical mastermind Thabo Senong hailing the prestigious tournament as the ultimate cornerstone of youth football development in South Africa.
The high-stakes regional showdown, running from 26–28 June at the iconic Erica Park Grounds in Belhar, features a massive line-up of 32 elite teams.
Battle lines have been drawn across the boys’ U-18 and girls’ U-20 divisions, as teams fight tooth and nail not just for local bragging rights, but for a ticket to the coveted Engen Champ of Champs national finals in Johannesburg later this year.
Defending champions Cape Town City FC (boys’ division) and Cape Town Roses (girls’ division) enter the weekend with massive targets on their backs.
The blockbuster action explodes onto the pitch at 09h00 today, with the Roses launching their title defense in a fiery clash against Spurs WFC.
Senong, a veteran strategist who has navigated two FIFA U-20 World Cups and scouted extensively across Lesotho, Tanzania, and Malawi, insisted that the tournament’s impact remains utterly unmatched across the continent.
“You could not find a tournament like the Engen Knockout Challenge and the value it brings,” Senong declared. “Without competition, you are unable to measure talent. To the coaches, it is a great and big tournament to benchmark yourself.”
Playing under the electrifying banner ‘Where Diski Legends Start’, South Africa’s brightest young stars are officially on notice, with scouts and club bosses descending on Belhar to unearth the country’s next generation of elite football talent.
