Mutale Faces Seven-Day Water Shutdown as Several Communities Brace for Disruption
VHEMBE: Thousands of residents across several communities supplied by the Mutale water system are facing a seven-day water shutdown as authorities prepare to install and connect new pumps and electricity infrastructure.
The interruption is scheduled to begin on Monday, 31 August 2026, and is expected to continue until Monday, 7 September 2026.
The Vhembe District Municipality said the shutdown is necessary to allow work to be carried out on the Mutale water weir system.
For households that depend on the system for drinking water, cooking, cleaning and other daily needs, the planned interruption could bring significant disruption.
Which Mutale areas will be affected?
According to the district municipality, the shutdown will affect several supply lines serving communities across the Mutale area.
The affected areas include the Dzimauli line, which supplies Tshandama and Maladani.
Residents supplied through the Tshilamba line are also expected to be affected. These include communities in Lukau, Phalama, Tshishivhe, Mulodi Tsha Ntha, Mulodi Tsha Fhasi and Matshetshete.
The disruption will also extend to communities supplied through the Mukondeni line, including Bashasha, Makwilidza and Maheni.
Other affected areas include the Mavunde line, stretching from Shadani to Sambandou, as well as the Tikiline.
The municipality has urged residents in all affected communities to prepare for the interruption before the shutdown begins.
Why is the water being shut down?
The planned shutdown is linked to infrastructure work intended to improve the reliability and capacity of the Mutale water supply system.
The work will involve installing and connecting new pumps, as well as connecting electricity infrastructure to equipment at the Mutale water weir.
While the shutdown is expected to cause short-term disruption, the municipality said the work is necessary to strengthen the system and improve its ability to supply water to communities in the area.
The Mutale water system plays an important role in supplying households across the region, making the planned seven-day interruption a significant concern for residents who rely on the network.
Residents urged to prepare
With the shutdown expected to last for a full week, residents have been urged to store enough water before the interruption begins.
Authorities have also advised households to use their stored water sparingly throughout the shutdown and to plan their consumption carefully.
The municipality apologised for the inconvenience caused by the planned installation and maintenance work.
It said normal water supply is expected to resume once the installation and connection of the new equipment have been completed.
For residents in the affected communities, however, the immediate priority is preparation. With the shutdown beginning on Monday, households have limited time to secure enough water for the days ahead.
