Northern Cape SAPS issue stern warning against continuous circulation of old video clips

The Northern Cape SAPS Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Koliswa Otola, has expressed serious concern over a video that is being re-circulated on social media platforms depicting an incident that occurred in Kimberley in April 2024.

Otola has cautioned members of the public against sharing the video further, warning that the continued circulation of such content may inflame tensions, spread misinformation and undermine peace and stability in the province.

“As SAPS, we are deeply concerned about the irresponsible re-sharing of this video at a time when the province is preparing for the looming 30 June Shutdown and Anti-Foreign sentiment marches. The circulation of old footage, especially content that may be taken out of context, has the potential to provoke fear, anger and unnecessary conflict within communities,” said Otola.

She urged the public to act responsibly on social media and to refrain from posting or forwarding material that could incite violence, hatred or public disorder.

“We appeal to all residents of the Northern Cape to exercise restraint and to avoid contributing to the spread of harmful content. Social media must not be used as a tool to destabilise communities or to fuel division. SAPS will continue to monitor the situation closely and will not hesitate to act against any person who uses digital platforms to incite violence, spread hate speech or threaten public safety,” she added.

Otola further called on community leaders, organisers and participants of the planned marches to ensure that all activities remain peaceful, lawful and respectful of the rights of others.
