Richards Bay hero Xulu explains the press that exposed Petersen
Richards Bay striker Nqaba Xulu has explained the thinking behind the intense press that led to his opening goal against Kaizer Chiefs.
Xulu pounced after Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen struggled to clear the ball under pressure during Wednesday’s 2-2 draw at Princess Magogo Stadium.
The Richards Bay striker revealed the team had specifically planned to press Petersen in certain situations.
“Regarding the press, we had also planned it,” Xulu said. “But it was based on certain moments.”
Xulu said the wet conditions also influenced his decision to close Petersen down quickly.
“In that specific moment, I saw that since the field is wet, it was a ball I felt I could reach faster.
“Because if he (Petersen) takes a touch, it would run away from him,” explained Xulu.
Xulu’s pressure paid off as he scored his second goal of the match later on, completing a brace.
The result left Chiefs third on the Betway Premiership log, behind Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns.
