Limpopo Police Arrest 20 Suspects for Election Offences During 2026 Local Government Polls

The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo has arrested 20 suspects following various election-related offences during the 2026 Local Government Elections held between 2 and 4 November 2026.

Law enforcement agencies registered a total of 33 criminal cases across the province as they moved to enforce electoral laws and maintain order.

The recorded charges include fraud, common assault, malicious damage to property, pointing of a firearm, and direct contraventions of the Electoral Act 73 of 1998.

Among the notable violations were incidents where voters allegedly photographed their marked ballot papers using mobile phones and shared the images on social media platforms.

Authorities highlighted that such actions directly violate South African electoral legislation, which strictly prohibits compromising the secrecy and integrity of the voting process.

Other unlawful disruptions during the voting period led to immediate police intervention and subsequent arrests.

Limpopo Provincial Commissioner of Police, Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, welcomed the swift actions taken by law enforcement. He commended SAPS members, auxiliary law enforcement agencies, and community stakeholders for their tireless work in securing a safe environment for voters and election officials.

“SAPS will not hesitate to take action against anyone who violates the law, irrespective of their position or affiliation,” Lieutenant General Scheepers reiterated, confirming that all reported cases are being formally processed.

A number of the arrested suspects have already made their initial appearances in local Magistrates’ Courts across the province as investigations continue.
