Polokwane businessman arrested over alleged arson attacks that caused R800,000 damage

Polokwane businessman arrested

A 51-year-old Polokwane businessman has been arrested following an intelligence-driven police operation that linked him to two alleged malicious damage to property cases, including a devastating vehicle fire that nearly trapped seven sleeping residents inside their home.

The suspect was taken into custody on Monday morning, 13 July 2026, at his residence in the Welgelegen suburb after members of the Provincial Tracking Team and the Provincial Investigation Unit executed a warrant of arrest.

The arrest follows weeks of intensive investigations into two incidents reported on Saturday, 28 June 2026, in the Seshego and Westernburg policing precincts.

According to police, the first incident unfolded at about 4:30am when an unknown suspect allegedly set alight the signboard of a rehabilitation centre in Ladanna, near Dendron Road.

Investigators allege the suspect then travelled to Seshego Zone 3, where a Toyota Hilux Extended Cab was deliberately set on fire.

The blaze quickly escalated, causing extensive damage to the vehicle before spreading to part of a nearby house. At the time, seven people were asleep inside the residence and were unaware of the danger unfolding outside.

Neighbours rushed to the scene and managed to extinguish the flames before the fire could consume more of the property or claim lives.

The combined damage is estimated at approximately R800,000.

The case was subsequently transferred to the Provincial Office for further investigation. Police say detectives, supported by intelligence gathering and forensic investigations, were able to positively link the businessman to both incidents.

Based on the evidence gathered, investigators obtained a warrant of arrest, leading to Monday’s operation.

During the arrest, police also seized a Toyota Fortuner believed to have been used during the commission of the alleged offences.

The 51-year-old suspect is expected to appear before the Seshego and Polokwane Magistrates’ Courts on Tuesday, 14 July 2026, where he will face charges of malicious damage to property.

Police have confirmed that the investigation remains ongoing, with detectives continuing to examine all aspects of the case.

The arrest marks a significant breakthrough in an investigation that began with two seemingly connected acts of destruction and escalated into a province-wide intelligence operation. Authorities have indicated that further developments may follow as the investigation progresses.
