Police seize R9m counterfeit goods in Marabastad
Police have seized counterfeit goods worth more than R9 million during an operation in Marabastad, Pretoria.
The raid was conducted on Thursday, 10 September by the SAPS National Illicit Goods Unit and Gauteng Illicit Goods Unit, alongside Public Order Policing, SARS Customs and brand-protection representatives.
More than 10,000 counterfeit items were confiscated, including branded sportswear, footwear, cosmetics and cellphone accessories.
Lieutenant Colonel Amanda van Wyk said the operation forms part of a nationwide crackdown on illicit trade.
She said counterfeit goods undermine legitimate businesses, pose potential health and safety risks, and have a negative impact on the economy.
The seizure follows a raid in Johannesburg’s CBD last week, where police recovered Springboks merchandise and manufacturing equipment worth more than R1.5 million.
