Owono Breaks Silence After Jesús de Miguel’s Death
FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono has spoken for the first time since the collision that cost Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel his life, and his words show a man shaken to his core.
Owono was sent off after the challenge in which De Miguel suffered head and chest injuries.
The striker later died, and Spanish police have opened an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter, which is a procedural step and does not in itself suggest guilt.
What should have been a routine football match turned into a tragedy that will mark the goalkeeper for the rest of his life.
“I never intended to harm anyone. It was a terrible accident that I wish I could have prevented.
“No words can express the pain, guilt, and sadness I am feeling right now,” Owono said.
He then turned to those closest to the striker. “I extend my sincerest condolences to his family, friends, teammates, and everyone who loved him.”
Owono also reflected on what football means to him, and what it never should cost.
“Football means a lot to me, but no match, no victory, and no rivalry will ever be worth a human life,” he added.
He ended with an apology and a farewell. “I am sincerely sorry. I will carry this pain with me forever. Rest in peace.”
De Miguel’s death has drawn tributes from across the sport, including Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé and FC Andorra co-owner Gerard Piqué. For Owono, the road ahead is a long one.
