IEC Reports 12 Million Votes Cast by Late Afternoon, Gauteng Leads Turnout
The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) announced that voter turnout crossed a major milestone today, with approximately 12 million citizens casting their ballots by 5:00 PM.
Election officials reported steady queues throughout the day across all nine provinces.
According to the IEC’s late-afternoon briefing, Gauteng currently records the highest number of votes cast, closely followed by KwaZulu-Natal. Together, these two economic hubs account for the largest share of the national voter roll.
The IEC has praised voters for their patience and urged those still in line to remain at their voting stations.
Under electoral rules, any voter who is in the queue by the official closing time will be permitted to cast their ballot. Counting is expected to begin immediately after stations close, with preliminary provincial results anticipated later tonight.
