Matlou Targets Success at Stellenbosch FC After Kaizer Chiefs Departure
George Matlou has arrived at Stellenbosch FC with a clear mission: to help the club compete for major honours while starting a fresh chapter in his career.
After four seasons at Kaizer Chiefs, the 28 year old midfielder is ready to embrace a new challenge in the Cape Winelands, joining a club he believes has the structure, ambition and mentality needed to achieve success.
Matlou completed his long term move to Stellenbosch after leaving Chiefs at the end of last season, bringing an end to a four year spell with the Soweto giants. During his time at Naturena, he made 46 appearances across all competitions and gained valuable experience at one of South Africa’s biggest football clubs.
Now wearing the maroon colours of Stellenbosch, Matlou says he is excited about the opportunity ahead.
“I feel very happy to be here and to be part of Stellenbosch Football Club,” Matlou said. “I’m looking forward to this new journey that I’ve chosen to take.”
A club built on ambition and consistency
Matlou’s decision to join Stellenbosch was influenced by the club’s steady rise in South African football. Over recent seasons, Stellies have established themselves as one of the most competitive teams in the Premier Soccer League, known for their organised approach, attacking football and ability to challenge stronger opponents.
The midfielder said he had followed the club’s progress closely and admired the way they have built a winning environment.
“Stellenbosch is a well structured club that plays good football and has been competing every season. I saw myself being part of that,” he explained.
“Having watched and played against Stellenbosch throughout my career, I saw that this is a team with a winning mentality and an environment where I can achieve even more.”
The move represents a new opportunity for Matlou to play a bigger role in a team that continues to grow in confidence and reputation.
Matlou sets sights on team success
While excited about his individual journey, Matlou insists that collective achievement will be the priority. He understands that success will require patience, discipline and consistent performances throughout the season.
“It’s not going to be an easy season, and it’s a long journey, but if we take it one game at a time, with a winning desire, we can achieve big things together,” he said.
The midfielder believes Stellenbosch have the quality and determination to compete at the highest level, but he knows the team will need to remain focused through the challenges ahead.
His arrival adds further experience to a squad that has developed a reputation for competing against South Africa’s traditional football powerhouses.
A familiar return to the Western Cape
Although Matlou is beginning a new chapter at Stellenbosch, the Western Cape is not unfamiliar territory for him.
Before making his mark with Kaizer Chiefs, the midfielder spent time in the region, featuring for Cape Town All Stars and Cape Umoya United during loan spells from Bidvest Wits.
He also gained international experience during a two season stint in Portugal with Sanjoanense before returning home to continue his career with Moroka Swallows and later Kaizer Chiefs.
Now back in the Cape, Matlou is determined to use his experience to make an impact at Stellenbosch.
With a fresh challenge ahead and a club that shares his ambition, the midfielder believes this move could become one of the most important chapters of his career.
