Hawks Track Down Fugitive Serving 10-Year Sentence for Over R1 Million Fraud
The Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (DPCI), also known as the Hawks, in Mpumalanga welcomes the successful apprehension of a 63-year-old fugitive who had failed to hand himself over to authorities to serve a 10-year prison sentence for fraud.
The accused (63) was arrested by the DPCI Western Cape Serious Commercial Crime Investigation (SCCI), assisted by the Camps Bay City Improvement District and Camps Bay SAPS, in the Camps Bay CBD on Saturday, at approximately 21:00pm.
A J76 Order of Apprehension was issued by the Evander Magistrates’ Court on 6 November 2025 after the accused failed to surrender himself to commence serving his sentence. His appeal against the sentence was subsequently dismissed.
The sentence emanates from a fraud case investigated by the Hawks in Mpumalanga, in which the accused was found guilty of fraudulently claiming more than R1 million for work that was never performed in Secunda.
His co-accused passed away during the trial proceedings.
The accused was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment by the Evander Regional Court.
Following the dismissal of his appeal, he was expected to hand himself over to authorities to begin serving his sentence but failed to do so, resulting in the issuing of the J76 Order of Apprehension.
He is currently detained at Camps Bay SAPS and was expected to appear before the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court on Monday, where proceedings to facilitate his transfer to Mpumalanga will be initiated.
