South Africans Relive David Mabuza Recovery Scenario as Mashatile Recovers
PRETORIA: South Africans are once again reflecting on the health-related absence of a deputy president after Deputy President Paul Mashatile announced that he was recovering well from a recent minor medical procedure.
In a message posted on social media on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, Mashatile said he was regaining strength each day but would continue resting on the advice of his doctors.
He assured South Africans that work and delegated responsibilities were continuing under the capable team in his office, in collaboration with government, business and other stakeholders.
Mashatile also expressed gratitude to his family, medical team, government and African National Congress (ANC) colleagues, as well as President Cyril Ramaphosa and members of the public who had sent messages of support.
He reaffirmed his commitment to serving the country and said he looked forward to returning to his duties fully recovered and with renewed energy.
Mashatile’s announcement has drawn comparisons with the experience of former Deputy President David Mabuza, who also faced public scrutiny over his health during his time in office.
Mabuza, who served as deputy president from 2018 to 2023 under former President Cyril Ramaphosa, was frequently absent from official engagements because of health-related concerns.
His medical condition became a subject of public interest, prompting questions about his ability to perform his constitutional responsibilities.
In 2021, Mabuza travelled to Russia for medical treatment, while his office later provided updates on his recovery.
His health-related absences contributed to wider public discussions about the wellbeing of senior government leaders and the continuity of executive responsibilities.
Unlike Mabuza’s prolonged periods of health-related absence, Mashatile has described his current recovery as progressing well and indicated that he expects to return to his duties once cleared by his doctors.
The Deputy President’s office has not indicated when he will resume his full programme of official engagements.
