Former Emfuleni Official Denied Bail Again as Court Rejects ‘New Facts’ in Martha Rantsofu-Linked Case
VANDERBIJLPARK | Former Emfuleni Local Municipality official Janitha Van Reneen will remain behind bars after the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court dismissed her second attempt to secure bail, ruling that the evidence she relied on did not amount to new facts.
The decision marks another setback for the 25-year-old, whose name has become closely associated with one of the Vaal’s most high-profile criminal investigations. Van Reneen is facing fraud and corruption charges worth approximately R424,000 and has also been linked to the murder investigation into slain Emfuleni finance officer and whistle-blower Martha Mani Rantsofu.
Friday’s hearing centred on whether Van Reneen had presented genuinely new information that justified reopening her bail application. The court concluded that she had not.
Court rejects claim of fresh evidence
Van Reneen briefly appeared before the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court on Friday for her second bail application, less than a month after her first application was unsuccessful.
The matter had previously been postponed on Monday, 29 June 2026, to allow her legal team to present what they argued were new facts.
In her application, Van Reneen submitted several documents that she said clarified issues previously raised during the bail proceedings. These included the title deed for a property allegedly purchased by her husband, a WinDeed property search, her registered antenuptial contract with accrual under the Matrimonial Property Act 88 of 1984, and a Companies and Intellectual Property Commission search relating to her business, The Circle Management (Pty) Ltd.
She also relied on a CCTV image allegedly captured at her residence at 19:04 on 20 May 2026, the day of her arrest.
According to Van Reneen, the image showed her wearing pyjamas and allegedly captured the investigating officer at her home. She argued that the footage supported testimony previously given by Daniel Jacobus Jacobs during her first bail hearing.
Judge says evidence is not new
Presiding officer Mr Ipfi Mammburu dismissed the application, finding that the material presented had already been considered during the initial bail proceedings.
“In this matter, what is purported as new facts are facts that were previously dealt with in the first bail application, and these facts were considered by the applicant’s legal representative,” Mammburu ruled.
The magistrate said Van Reneen’s legal team had attempted to explain why the documents were not submitted during the first application, but that explanation did not satisfy the legal test required to reopen bail proceedings.
“It is not the inability to place facts before court that makes such facts new, but the non-existence thereof at the time when the bail application was conducted,” he said.
The court found that nothing material had changed since the previous bail hearing. Instead, Van Reneen was attempting to strengthen arguments based on information that already existed at the time.
Mammburu said the application amounted to revisiting issues that had already been decided.
“I am therefore of the view that there are no new facts put forward by the applicant, as she simply repeated the same facts and seeks to amplify same because she says she did not have the opportunity to do so, which proposition I strongly disagree with.”
The court ultimately ruled that there were no new facts warranting a reconsideration of bail and dismissed the application.
Murder of Martha Rantsofu remains in focus
During her submissions, Van Reneen also addressed the murder of Emfuleni Local Municipality whistle-blower and finance officer Martha Mani Rantsofu, stating that she had not disclosed any information about the killing or identified anyone allegedly responsible.
Rantsofu, 39, was gunned down at a tyre shop on Frikkie Meyer Boulevard in Vanderbijlpark, a murder that sent shockwaves through the municipality and intensified scrutiny of alleged corruption within Emfuleni Local Municipality.
Although Van Reneen faces fraud and corruption charges, she has also been linked to the broader investigation into Rantsofu’s assassination.
She was arrested by the Political Killings Task Team and remains in custody.
Case postponed
The matter has been postponed until 23 July 2026 as investigations continue.
With her second bail application now dismissed, Van Reneen will remain behind bars while prosecutors continue building their case.
