Sundowns Announce Deano Van Rooyen Signing
Mamelodi Sundowns have announced the signing of former Orlando Pirates defender Deano van Rooyen, adding experience and depth to their defence during a demanding period of the season.
The 29-year-old right-back joins the Brazilians after leaving Pirates by mutual agreement last month, becoming a free agent.
Sundowns moved quickly to secure his services after injuries created concerns in the right-back position, with Khuliso Mudau facing a lengthy spell on the sidelines and Zuko Mdunyelwa also dealing with a fitness concern.
Van Rooyen’s arrival gives head coach Miguel Cardoso another option at right-back, with Thapelo Morena previously among the senior players available to fill the position on the right.
The defender spent two seasons at Orlando Pirates after joining from Stellenbosch FC in 2024. During his time with the Buccaneers, he was part of a squad that lifted four trophies and gained CAF Champions League experience.
His move to Sundowns adds another chapter to his career, with the Brazilians competing on several fronts. Sundowns are navigating a congested schedule, making squad depth important.
Van Rooyen will now look to settle quickly at Chloorkop and compete for a starting place as Sundowns continue their pursuit of silverware across all competitions.
