Limpopo Man Jailed for 15 Years After Tavern Companion Beaten to Death
A night of drinking in a Limpopo village ended in a brutal killing, with a 29 year old man sentenced to 15 years in prison after his drinking companion was found naked, bleeding and badly beaten in the street.
Potego William Tolo, from Ga Rakgwatha village, was convicted of murder and sentenced to 15 years’ direct imprisonment in the Mokopane Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 28 August 2026.
The court also declared Tolo unfit to possess a firearm in terms of section 103 of the Firearms Control Act.
Tavern drinking session ends in fatal assault
The murder took place during the early hours of 11 August 2025 in Ga Rakgwatha, under the Moletlane policing area in Lepele Nkumpi.
According to the case presented in court, Tolo had been drinking at a local tavern with 34 year old ButiButi Mapencil Lekgeu that night.
What happened afterwards turned a social gathering into a fatal confrontation.
The court heard that Tolo assaulted Lekgeu with an iron steel object while he was lying on the ground.
He then allegedly stripped Lekgeu of his clothes and left him in the street.
The victim was later discovered by community members, who found him naked, bleeding and suffering from severe injuries.
They rushed him to Ga Rakgwatha Clinic, but medical staff declared him dead on arrival.
His relatives later identified his body.
Police investigation leads to arrest
Following the killing, Moletlane SAPS opened a murder investigation.
Constable Billy Morepye Nchabeleng, attached to the station’s detective unit, was responsible for tracing the suspect.
Investigators eventually located Tolo in Ga Rakgwatha village, where he was arrested on 5 November 2025.
Tolo was initially granted R1,000 bail and appeared before the Magatle Magistrate’s Court.
The matter was later transferred to the Mokopane Magistrate’s Court, where the case proceeded to trial.
The court ultimately found Tolo guilty of murder and sentenced him to 15 years’ direct imprisonment.
Police welcome murder conviction
Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers welcomed the conviction and sentence.
The case brings an end to a year long legal process that began after Lekgeu’s body was discovered in the street in the early hours of August 2025.
The conviction also highlights the work of investigators in tracing the suspect and building the case that ultimately resulted in a lengthy prison sentence.
For Lekgeu’s family and the Ga Rakgwatha community, the court’s decision closes one chapter of a case that began with a night out at a local tavern and ended with a man’s death.
