Police and Home Affairs launch unannounced operation as authorities tighten enforcement in North West

A surprise law enforcement operation in Zeerust has led to the arrest of 13 undocumented migrants, as South African authorities continue to intensify efforts to enforce immigration laws and combat cross border crime.

The operation, carried out on Friday under the banner of Operation Shanela, brought together members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the North West and officials from the Department of Home Affairs. The coordinated raid formed part of ongoing efforts to identify individuals living in the country without the required legal documentation.

The multidisciplinary operation included members of the North West Anti Gang Unit, the Illicit Mining Team and officials from the Department of Home Affairs. The teams conducted an unannounced operation in Zeerust, targeting areas identified through intelligence driven policing.

According to police, the 13 people arrested are between the ages of 22 and 48. The group includes nationals from Zimbabwe, Malawi, Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

All 13 individuals have been taken into custody and are expected to be processed in accordance with South Africa’s immigration legislation.

In addition to the arrests, officers recovered a sewing machine and a butcher’s knife that had previously been reported as lost property. The items have been secured as part of the police’s lost and found process.

Operation Shanela remains one of SAPS’ key crime prevention initiatives, focusing on high visibility policing, intelligence led operations and coordinated action against criminal activity across South Africa. The latest arrests in Zeerust highlight the continued collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the Department of Home Affairs in addressing illegal immigration and related offences.

Authorities have not indicated whether further arrests are expected, but investigations linked to the operation are continuing.
