COPE lodges SAPS complaint over Kgotso Khaeane murder investigation in Free State

The fight for justice in the death of Kgethang Kgotso Khaeane has taken a dramatic turn after the Congress of the People (COPE) formally lodged a complaint with the Office of the Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Free State. The party says serious questions surrounding the police investigation have fuelled growing public concern and left the victim’s family searching for answers.

COPE’s intervention comes amid mounting scrutiny over the handling of the case involving former Mangaung Municipal Manager, Advocate Tankiso Mea, who allegedly drove over Khaeane, resulting in his death.

The complaint follows widespread concern from both the Khaeane family and members of the public over the progress of the investigation and whether it has been handled with the urgency and transparency expected in such a serious matter.

According to media reports and accounts circulating publicly, Khaeane was allegedly killed while trying to intervene in an altercation involving a young woman during the early hours of the morning.

COPE leader Teboho Loate said further reports have alleged that the suspect was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident and allegedly claimed that political connections within the African National Congress (ANC) would shield him from prosecution.

These allegations have not been proven and remain subject to an ongoing police investigation.

Loate said COPE is deeply concerned that, despite the seriousness of the allegations, no arrest had reportedly been made at the time the complaint was submitted. The party also raised concerns over claims that the investigating officer has failed to provide the Khaeane family with meaningful updates on the progress of the case.

According to COPE, the lack of communication and the apparent delay in the investigation risk creating a public perception that the matter is not being handled transparently, particularly because the allegations involve an individual with alleged political connections.

The complaint calls on the Provincial Commissioner to urgently intervene by ensuring the investigation is conducted thoroughly, fairly and without unnecessary delays.

COPE has also demanded that all investigative and legal processes be followed correctly, that the investigating officer maintain regular communication with the victim’s family, and that the public be assured that no individual is above the law.

“The tragic death of Kgethang Kgotso Khaeane should not become another case where justice is delayed because of political influence or perceived privilege. Every South African should be treated equally before the law, regardless of status or political affiliation,” Loate said.

“We expect the South African Police Service to act decisively, independently and without fear, favour or prejudice. The Khaeane family deserves answers, accountability and justice.”

As public attention intensifies, the case is likely to remain under close scrutiny. The outcome of the police investigation and SAPS’ response to COPE’s complaint will be closely watched by both the Khaeane family and South Africans concerned about accountability, transparency and equal justice under the law.
