I Was Visiting a Traditional Healer’: Brown Mogotsi Explains Absence of Bodyguards During Alleged

North West businessman and alleged political fixer, Oupa Brown Mogotsi, has provided the court with an unexpected explanation for why he was unaccompanied by security details on the night of his alleged ambush.

On the stand during his ongoing bail proceedings on new facts, Mogotsi stated that he deliberately left his personal bodyguards behind because he was on his way to consult a traditional healer (inyanga).

He explained to the court that he did not want his security personnel to become privy to his private personal affairs.

The State has accused Mogotsi of orchestrating a fake assassination attempt in Vosloorus, alleging that he fired 11 rounds into his own vehicle to defeat the ends of justice and mislead authorities.

Mogotsi, who faces charges including perjury, unlawful possession of a firearm, and defeating the administration of justice, has strongly denied fabricating the incident. He continues to maintain that he was the victim of a genuine ambush.

The Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court is currently considering his fourth bid for bail, which has been fiercely opposed by prosecutors citing separate allegations of an intercepted prison escape plot.

The court has scheduled its final ruling on Mogotsi’s latest bail application for 22 September 2026.
