Another Mbokazi Rising? Mbekezeli Mbokazi’s Younger Brother Impresses at Engen Knockout
South African football may have discovered another exciting defensive prospect, and the famous Mbokazi surname is once again at the centre of the conversation.
While Mbekezeli Mbokazi continues to build his career with Chicago Fire and Bafana Bafana, his younger brother, Qophelo Zanathi Mbokazi, has stepped into the spotlight after an eye catching performance at the Engen Knockout Challenge in Durban.
The teenage defender produced a composed display on the tournament’s opening day for uMkhanyakude Football Academy, drawing attention from coaches, scouts and supporters as he helped his side progress in one of South Africa’s most respected youth football competitions.
Like his older brother, Zanathi operates as a left sided centre back. Calm on the ball, disciplined in defence and confident under pressure, the youngster has already started attracting interest from clubs eager to monitor his development.
Although the two brothers grew up in different towns, Zanathi confirmed that they are indeed family, ending any uncertainty surrounding their relationship.
Known as “Mlungu” in KwaHlabisa, the promising defender said competing in the Engen Knockout has been a significant milestone in his young career.
“This is my first Engen tournament. The experience has been excellent and I believe there are opportunities here,” he told iDiski Times.
For Zanathi, following in his brother’s footsteps is not simply about sharing a surname. It is about learning from someone who has already reached the highest levels of South African football.
The teenager revealed that Mbekezeli continues to guide and inspire him as he works towards achieving his own professional ambitions.
“We play the same position and I’m learning a lot from him. My dream is to become like him, and maybe even better,” he said with a laugh.
His performances have also earned the backing of someone who knows both brothers well.
uMkhanyakude Football Academy coach Bheki Mdletshe, who played an important role in Mbekezeli’s development, believes Zanathi possesses the ability to become a professional footballer in his own right.
Mdletshe revealed that several clubs have already expressed interest in the talented defender. However, he declined to identify them while the Engen Knockout Challenge is still in progress.
As the tournament continues, Zanathi Mbokazi now has the opportunity to prove that his recent display was no coincidence. Carrying a recognised football surname may bring added attention, but the young defender is showing early signs that he has the talent to create a reputation of his own.
