Thulamela Councillor Arrested Over Alleged Bid to Derail SIU Corruption Investigation

Thulamela councillor arrested

A Limpopo councillor is at the centre of a growing corruption scandal after authorities accused him of attempting to buy silence in an investigation that has already raised serious questions about municipal governance and procurement practices.

Netshivhumbe Gumani, 44, a councillor from Thulamela Local Municipality, was arrested after allegedly offering a substantial bribe to a Special Investigating Unit (SIU) investigator in an effort to influence an ongoing corruption probe linked to Mahikeng Local Municipality.

The arrest marks a dramatic development in a case that investigators say involves allegations of maladministration, questionable procurement processes and suspicious financial dealings.

Alleged R70,000 Offer to Interfere With Investigation

According to authorities, Gumani allegedly offered SIU investigators R70,000 in exchange for ignoring evidence uncovered during the investigation into controversial municipal lease agreements.

Investigators claim the councillor did not stop at a single approach. He allegedly contacted several SIU officials in an attempt to influence the outcome of the probe.

The situation escalated on 18 June 2026 when Gumani allegedly handed an investigator R10,000 in cash as part of the proposed bribe arrangement.

That exchange triggered a coordinated operation involving the SIU, the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks, and the South African Police Service.

The operation ultimately led to his arrest.

Corruption Probe Under the Spotlight

The alleged bribery attempt has placed renewed focus on the broader investigation unfolding at Mahikeng Local Municipality.

The SIU is currently examining allegations of corruption and maladministration linked to procurement contracts and municipal lease agreements.

Officials say forensic investigations uncovered financial transactions that have raised concerns among investigators. These transactions reportedly involve service providers and other entities connected to municipal business dealings.

While the full scope of the investigation remains under scrutiny, authorities have signalled that the probe is continuing and that efforts to obstruct it will be dealt with decisively.

Court Appearance and Bail Hearing

Gumani appeared before the Mmabatho Magistrate’s Court on corruption charges following his arrest.

The matter was postponed to 29 June 2026, when he is expected to formally apply for bail.

As the legal process unfolds, the case is likely to attract significant public attention, particularly as South Africa continues to grapple with persistent concerns about corruption and accountability within local government structures.

For now, investigators remain focused on the underlying corruption probe, while prosecutors prepare to pursue the charges arising from the alleged bribery attempt.

The arrest sends a clear signal that attempts to interfere with anti-corruption investigations are themselves under intense scrutiny and may carry serious consequences.
