Zimdollar’s Netflix Breakthrough: A Career Milestone Years in the Making

For years, Ukhozi FM presenter Zimiphi “Zimdollar” Biyela carried a quiet ambition that felt just out of reach. Despite an established presence in South African television, the idea of appearing on Netflix, the world’s most powerful streaming platform, seemed distant, almost reserved for a different tier of performer.

Now, that perception has been rewritten.

Biyela has officially landed a role in the upcoming Netflix drama The Polygamist, marking what she describes as a deeply personal and long-awaited breakthrough in her acting journey.

A Dream That Once Felt Out of Reach

Speaking candidly about her reaction to the milestone, Biyela reflected on how she once viewed Netflix as an exclusive space.

“I used to just watch shows on Netflix and think that this platform was only for prominent and elite people, somewhere we could never reach,” she said.

Her words capture a sentiment familiar to many South African actors navigating the global entertainment hierarchy, where streaming platforms often feel geographically and professionally distant.

Yet her casting signals a shift in that narrative.

A New Role in a High-Profile Drama

Biyela has filmed one season of The Polygamist, where she portrays Mrs Msomi, the wife of a provincial minister (MEC). The series has already generated attention for its storyline and cast, which includes prominent names such as Sdumo Mtshali and Gugu Gumede.

The production places Biyela in a storyline centred on power, family dynamics and political influence, a thematic space that demands emotional range and precision.

While details of the series remain tightly held, her involvement alone positions her within one of the more closely watched South African productions set for global streaming audiences.

Balancing Fame, Radio and Business Expansion

Despite the excitement surrounding her Netflix debut, Biyela is clear-eyed about the reality of her schedule.

Her weekday midday slot on Ukhozi FM, broadcasting from 12:00 to 15:00, remains a central commitment. That alone limits her availability for extended filming periods.

“If they liked my talent, I will continue. However, it cannot be a very long storyline because I am now busy with business commitments and no longer have much time,” she explained.

The tension between opportunity and capacity is not lost on her. Filming schedules, she notes, often conflict with live radio broadcasting, making long-term commitments to television production increasingly difficult.

From Television Familiarity to Streaming Recognition

Biyela is no stranger to South African screens. Her previous roles include appearances in eHostela, uZalo, Durban Gen and uMkhokha, all of which have contributed to her steady rise in the local entertainment industry.

However, Netflix represents a different kind of visibility. It is not only a platform but a global stage, where local productions can travel far beyond national borders.

For Biyela, that shift carries symbolic weight as much as professional value.

A Growing Business Empire Beyond Entertainment

Alongside her media career, Biyela is expanding her entrepreneurial footprint. By the end of next month, she plans to launch the 20th branch of her traditional herbal product business, KwaMakhulu UKM Organics.

The expansion reflects a deliberate pivot towards long-term financial independence beyond entertainment.

“People really love the herbal products sold in my shops. Therefore, I cannot distance myself from the stores because I need to explain the products well to customers so they can get proper help,” she said.

Her business is not a side project in the traditional sense. It is a parallel career that demands attention, physical presence and strategic growth.

Expansion Into Mpumalanga

The company’s next phase includes opening two additional branches in Mpumalanga, in Mkhondo and Emalahleni. The move signals aggressive regional expansion and a growing customer base for her wellness brand.

It also reinforces a broader reality for many South African media personalities who are diversifying income streams in an unpredictable entertainment economy.

A Career at a Crossroads of Opportunity

Zimdollar’s Netflix debut is more than a casting announcement. It reflects a career at the intersection of media, business and evolving global opportunity.

From radio studios in Durban to streaming platforms watched across continents, her trajectory underscores a changing entertainment landscape where South African talent is increasingly visible, but still required to navigate competing demands.

For Biyela, the role in The Polygamist is not an endpoint. It is a carefully balanced addition to a life already stretched across broadcasting, acting and entrepreneurship.

And for audiences, it is a reminder that the path from local fame to global screens is no longer theoretical. It is happening in real time.
