Uthukela Municipal Manager Denied Bail, Co-Accused Released on R20,000, Over R600k Police Bribe Attempt
The Estcourt Magistrate’s Court has denied bail to Uthukela District Municipality Manager, Langelihle Jili, following his arrest in connection with a multi-million rand corruption and fraud case. While Jili remains in custody, his co-accused was granted bail of R20,000.
The high-profile arrests stem from a joint operation targeting widespread financial irregularities within the municipality.
Further compounding his legal woes, state prosecutors revealed that Jili allegedly attempted to bribe investigating officers with R600,000 in cash in a desperate bid to evade arrest and make the charges disappear.
The Hawks’ Serious Corruption Investigation unit confirmed that the bribery attempt was immediately flagged, leading to additional charges of corruption being added to Jili’s docket.
While the co-accused secured their temporary freedom under strict bail conditions, the magistrate ruled that Jili poses a significant flight risk and could potentially interfere with state witnesses or destroy crucial financial evidence if released.
The case has been postponed to a later date for further investigation.
