Two Alleged Cross Border Vehicle Smugglers Arrested After Police Recover Stolen Cars Near Polokwane

Polokwane news, Beitbridge Port of Entry,

A carefully planned police operation has disrupted what investigators believe was an attempt to move two stolen vehicles across South Africa’s northern border, leading to the arrest of two men who are expected to appear in court on Monday.

The suspects, aged 43 and 45, were arrested on Saturday, 11 July 2026, after an intelligence driven operation along the N1 near Polokwane. Police believe the vehicles were being transported towards the Beitbridge Port of Entry, where they were allegedly intended to be smuggled out of the country.

The pair are scheduled to appear before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 13 July 2026, on charges of possession of suspected stolen motor vehicles.

The operation was led by the Provincial Tracking Team and the Provincial Investigation Unit, working alongside ShadowSecure Security, Tshimollo Security and Investigations, Tracker Connect and Limpopo Tactical Security.

According to police, officers received intelligence indicating that two vehicles reported stolen in Gauteng were travelling north on the N1. Acting swiftly on the information, law enforcement teams positioned themselves along the route and monitored the suspected convoy.

The breakthrough came in the Westenburg policing area outside Polokwane, where officers intercepted both vehicles before they could continue their journey towards the border.

A preliminary investigation confirmed that the first vehicle, a silver Toyota Corolla Cross, had been reported stolen in the Brooklyn policing area in Pretoria. The South African driver, aged 43, was arrested at the scene.

Investigators then established that the second vehicle, a Mazda 2, had been reported stolen in the Silverton policing area in Pretoria. The driver, a 45 year old Zimbabwean national, was also taken into custody.

Police opened cases of possession of suspected stolen motor vehicles at Westenburg Police Station. Both vehicles have been seized and will undergo further investigation as detectives continue to examine whether the arrests are linked to a wider cross border vehicle theft network.

Acting Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Major General Jan Scheepers welcomed the arrests, describing them as another example of the value of intelligence led policing and close cooperation between law enforcement agencies and private security partners.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine whether additional suspects or organised criminal syndicates were involved in the alleged smuggling operation.

The latest arrests come as police continue to intensify efforts to combat cross border vehicle theft and organised crime along key transport routes leading to the Beitbridge Port of Entry, one of South Africa’s busiest border crossings.
