Limpopo Crackdown Uncovers R77.9 Million in Counterfeit Goods as Authorities Target Illegal Trade

Limpopo

A sweeping law enforcement operation across Limpopo has exposed the scale of South Africa’s illicit goods market, with authorities seizing counterfeit and illegal products worth an estimated R77.9 million during a coordinated three day crackdown.

The operation, carried out between 7 and 9 July 2026, targeted businesses in Tzaneen, Phalaborwa and Mankweng, where officials uncovered more than 162,000 counterfeit and illicit items ranging from fake branded clothing to unregulated medicines and agricultural products.

The large scale raid was led by the National Counterfeit and Illicit Goods Unit, supported by Public Order Policing (POP), the South African Revenue Service (SARS) Customs, the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA), the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS), the Department of Agriculture, and Brand Protectors.

More Than 162,000 Illegal Items Removed from the Market

Authorities confiscated 162,072 illicit and counterfeit products during the operation, highlighting the growing challenge posed by illegal trade in South Africa.

Among the seized items were:

  • Branded clothing and footwear
  • Jewellery
  • Cosmetics
  • Fashion accessories
  • Toys
  • Consumable goods
  • Illicit medicines
  • Agricultural products, including pesticides and honey
  • Alcohol
  • Electrical, automotive and mechanical products that failed to meet compulsory safety specifications

Officials said many of the products posed potential risks to consumers, while others infringed intellectual property laws and failed to comply with national regulations.

Businesses Face Compliance Action

The operation did not end with product seizures alone.

Authorities issued 37 non compliance notices to businesses found to be operating in breach of applicable legislation. The notices form part of ongoing efforts to improve regulatory compliance and reduce the circulation of illegal goods across the province.

Law enforcement agencies have intensified inspections as counterfeit networks continue to exploit legitimate retail channels and informal trading markets.

Police Praise Joint Effort

Acting Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Major General Jan Scheepers praised the commitment shown by police officers and partner agencies involved in the operation.

He commended members of the Limpopo South African Police Service and their law enforcement partners for their continued efforts to disrupt the trade in counterfeit and illicit goods, protect consumers, and enforce the laws of the Republic of South Africa.

Ongoing Fight Against Counterfeit Goods

The latest seizure represents one of the largest counterfeit goods operations in Limpopo this year and reflects the increasing focus on dismantling illegal trading networks that undermine legitimate businesses and place consumers at risk.

Authorities have indicated that enforcement operations will continue as part of broader efforts to combat organised illicit trade and ensure businesses comply with South African regulations.
