The bodies of three women found in and around Kempton Park remain unidentified at a Gauteng state mortuary, as authorities continue investigating a series of deaths in the area.

Gauteng Health spokesperson Steve Mabona said today, Monday that only one of the women whose bodies have been recovered in the area has been released to relatives.

The identification of the remaining three women is still under way and could take time, particularly where the bodies are badly injured or decomposed.

Families are being urged to come forward, while forensic testing may be used where visual identification is not possible.

The discoveries form part of a series of cases reported along the R21 corridor and in Rhodesfield. Police have recorded at least five women found dead in or around Kempton Park since mid-July.

A multidisciplinary task team has been established to investigate the cases and determine whether they are connected. Police have not confirmed that a serial killer is responsible, but have urged women to avoid walking or running alone in isolated areas.

One suspect remains in custody in connection with the first body, which was discovered on 15 July.

Meanwhile, the family of 38-year-old runner Elizabeth “Tsontso” Moselakgomo has formally identified her remains.

Moselakgomo disappeared on 9 September after leaving her Rhodesfield home for an afternoon run. Her body was found behind a hotel in Rhodesfield on Saturday night.

A fifth woman’s body was also reported near Olifantsfontein today, Monday morning, adding to growing concerns about the number of women found dead in the broader Kempton Park area.
