The Mighty ANC Limpopo mobilises candidates for 2026 local government elections
POLOKWANE: The African National Congress (ANC) in Limpopo has begun mobilising its ward and proportional representation (PR) councillor candidates ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections, with the party reaffirming its intention to contest all wards across the province.
The party convened its candidates on Monday at Jack Botes Hall in Polokwane for an address by ANC Limpopo Provincial Chairperson, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, who spoke on behalf of the Provincial Executive Committee (PEC).
The gathering was preceded by a photoshoot involving ANC ward councillor candidates and was chaired by the provincial secretary, Vhamusanda Reuben Madadzhe.
Addressing the candidates, Ramathuba reminded them of the responsibility entrusted to them by voters and challenged them to demonstrate through their conduct and work that the public’s confidence in the ANC had not been misplaced.
“The people have entrusted you with a responsibility. Now, it is your turn to prove that their trust was not misplaced,” Ramathuba said.
Her message comes as political parties intensify preparations for the local government elections, scheduled for 4 November 2026. The ANC’s campaign in Limpopo is expected to face competition from several opposition parties seeking to expand their support in the province.
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) are among the ANC’s major challengers. The party has already announced its readiness to contest every ward in Limpopo and has positioned itself as an alternative to the governing party, particularly on issues of municipal service delivery, unemployment and economic inequality.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) also remains a significant competitor, seeking to increase its support beyond its established areas of strength. The party is expected to campaign on municipal accountability, governance and service delivery.
Other parties that could influence the electoral contest include uMkhonto weSizwe (MK), ActionSA, Mayibuye IAfrika Movement and the Patriotic Alliance (PA). These parties may attract voters dissatisfied with the established political formations and could affect the distribution of votes in closely contested wards.
The ANC’s mobilisation of its ward and PR candidates is therefore likely to be central to its efforts to retain political influence across Limpopo.
The party’s candidates will be expected to translate its campaign promises into practical programmes addressing residents’ concerns over water, roads, electricity, housing, employment and municipal administration.
With the election campaign gathering momentum, the ANC’s challenge will be to convince voters that its candidates can deliver effective and accountable local government.
