Three Arrested After 72 Year Old Woman Rescued in Dramatic Fordsburg Kidnapping Operation

Fordsburg kidnapping

A 72-year-old businesswoman is safe after a dramatic police operation ended with her rescue and the arrest of three suspected kidnappers less than a day after she was allegedly abducted from her business premises in Fordsburg, Johannesburg.

The rescue followed an intensive intelligence driven investigation that stretched across Johannesburg and involved some of South Africa’s most specialised law enforcement units. The operation brought an anxious wait for the victim’s family to an end and has renewed attention on the growing threat of kidnappings in Gauteng.

According to police, the woman was allegedly kidnapped on Tuesday when suspects forced her into a white Volkswagen Polo outside her business premises in Fordsburg before speeding away.

The incident immediately triggered a large scale response from the South African Police Service. Members of the SAPS National Crime Intelligence Anti Kidnapping Unit and the SAPS Gauteng Crime Intelligence Anti Kidnapping Unit launched an urgent investigation to trace the victim and identify those responsible.

At the same time, the SAPS Hostage Negotiation Team was deployed to support the victim’s family and assist with negotiations throughout the operation.

Investigators followed intelligence gathered from multiple sources, leading them to several locations across the Johannesburg CBD and surrounding areas. After hours of coordinated surveillance and tracking, officers eventually traced the suspects to Jeppe on Wednesday.

Police intercepted the vehicle and arrested three suspects during the operation. The 72-year-old victim was rescued unharmed and taken to hospital for a medical assessment as a precaution.

The successful rescue was the result of a coordinated effort involving the SAPS National Crime Intelligence Anti Kidnapping Unit, SAPS Gauteng Crime Intelligence Anti Kidnapping Unit, SAPS Provincial Emergency Services Flying Squad, Provincial Organised Crime, the SAPS Gauteng Detective Tracking Team, the SAPS Hostage Negotiation Team, the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department K9 Unit, and private security partners.

During the operation, police seized the white Volkswagen Polo believed to have been used in the alleged kidnapping, along with several mobile phones that investigators believe could provide valuable evidence.

The three suspects are expected to appear in court soon on charges of kidnapping.

Police have confirmed that investigations remain ongoing as detectives work to establish whether the suspects may be connected to other kidnapping cases in Gauteng.

The latest rescue highlights the increasing reliance on intelligence led policing and coordinated operations in tackling organised kidnapping syndicates. Authorities have indicated that further arrests remain possible as the investigation continues.
