Security Guard Killed as ATM Bombing Rocks Mmakau, Armed Suspects Escape After Deadly Attack
A failed ATM bombing turned deadly in the early hours of Wednesday when one security guard was shot and killed and another was critically injured during a violent attack in Mmakau, North West.
Police have launched investigations into charges of ATM bombing, murder and attempted murder after six armed suspects allegedly targeted an ATM outside a local pub that was closed at the time of the incident.
According to North West police spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh, officers responded to reports of an ATM bombing in progress at approximately 01:50.
When police arrived at the scene, they found two security guards, aged 62 and 51, who had responded to the incident.
The 62-year-old guard was declared dead at the scene by Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS). The second guard, aged 51, sustained serious gunshot injuries and was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he remains under medical care.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspects used explosives to damage the ATM in an attempt to gain access to the cash inside. Despite the powerful blast, they were unable to steal any money.
Police believe the security guards confronted the suspects during the attempted robbery and were met with gunfire.
Investigators say six unidentified men, all wearing balaclavas and face masks and carrying firearms, fled the scene on foot shortly after the shooting.
No arrests have been made, and detectives are continuing their investigation to identify and trace those responsible.
The incident has once again raised concerns over the growing threat posed by highly organised ATM bombing syndicates operating across South Africa. These attacks often involve military style planning, heavy weaponry and explosives, placing both security personnel and nearby communities at significant risk.
Police are appealing to members of the public who may have information that could assist the investigation to come forward.
