SAPS APPOINTS MULTIDISCIPLINARY TEAM TO INVESTIGATE MURDER OF MARCH AND MARCH GAUTENG LEADER

March and March Movement

The murder of March and March Gauteng leader Andile Mvuyiselwa Somgaxa has triggered a high-level investigation by the South African Police Service, with a specialised team of detectives and crime intelligence officers appointed to uncover the truth behind his killing.

Somgaxa was shot outside his home in Greenfield, Johannesburg, on 4 July 2026. After battling for his life in hospital, he died from his injuries on 9 July 2026, leaving investigators searching for answers and those responsible for the fatal attack.

SAPS Forms Specialised Team to Probe Killing

The Acting National Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), Lieutenant General Puleng Dimpane, in consultation with Gauteng Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Tommy Mthombeni, has established a multidisciplinary investigation team to handle the case.

The team includes experienced detectives and crime intelligence officers who will focus on gathering evidence, identifying possible suspects and determining the motive behind Somgaxa’s murder.

Dimpane said the formation of the specialised team reflects the seriousness with which SAPS is treating the case.

“The appointment of a multidisciplinary team underscores the seriousness with which SAPS is treating this matter. We are committed to conducting a thorough investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding this murder and to ensure accountability,” said Dimpane.

SAPS Vows to Find Those Behind Deadly Attack

Dimpane strongly condemned the killing and assured the public that investigators would use every available resource to track down those responsible.

He said SAPS would not stop until the suspects behind the attack were identified, traced and brought before the courts.

The murder has raised renewed concerns about violent crimes targeting community leaders and public figures, with authorities facing pressure to ensure that cases involving targeted attacks receive urgent attention.

Warning Issued Against Attacks on Foreign Nationals

Meanwhile, Lieutenant General Mthombeni has warned individuals and groups involved in intimidation, harassment and violence against foreign nationals that such actions are illegal and will not be tolerated.

The warning follows the arrest of five suspects in Lephalale, Limpopo, who allegedly impersonated Department of Home Affairs officials and attempted to force foreign nationals out of Marapong township.

According to SAPS, the group allegedly targeted a Nigerian national, intimidating him and forcing him to close his business after claiming that foreign nationals were not allowed to operate businesses in South Africa.

Five Suspects Arrested in Limpopo Incident

The Department of Home Affairs later reviewed the businessman’s documents and confirmed that he was legally residing in South Africa and had valid permission to operate his business.

Dimpane welcomed the arrests and stressed that immigration enforcement remains the responsibility of authorised government institutions.

“The law applies equally to everyone. No individual or group has the authority to conduct immigration inspections, verify legal status, or remove people from communities. Those responsibilities rest solely with law enforcement agencies and relevant government departments,” said Dimpane.

Authorities have urged communities to report criminal activities and avoid taking the law into their own hands, warning that acts of intimidation and violence will result in criminal charges.

As the investigation into Somgaxa’s murder continues, SAPS says the multidisciplinary team will remain focused on uncovering the facts and ensuring that justice is served.
