Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Brandon Petersen has shown respect to his Orlando Pirates rival Sipho Chaine. He has praised his consistency ahead of Sunday’s blockbuster Soweto derby at FNB Stadium.
The two shot-stoppers are not only set to go head-to-head in one of South Africa’s biggest fixtures, but are also battling for a place in Bafana Bafana’s FIFA World Cup squad.
Chaine was a notable omission from Hugo Broos’ last squad for the March friendlies, while Petersen himself missed out due to injury following surgery.
Broos revealed he would have picked Petersen – who has been a standout performer for Chiefs this season – had he been available.
But speaking ahead of the derby, Petersen was full of praise for his counterpart, acknowledging the level Chaine has maintained over recent seasons.
“It’s not just this season… last season as well. He’s been one of the most consistent goalkeepers in the league so far,” said Petersen.
“Hats off to him because at clubs like Chiefs and Pirates the expectations are always high. For him to perform like that season in and season out – game after game – I take my hat off to him.”
Chaine, who has been a regular for Pirates over the past four seasons, was also crowned Goalkeeper of the Season last term, underlining his growing reputation as one of the country’s top performers.
With national team selection and derby bragging rights on the line, Sunday’s clash could prove decisive for both keepers as they look to strengthen their claims ahead of the global showpiece.
