NPA Moves to Quash Rumours Over SAPS Arrest Warrants

Only Two Senior Officers Targeted as Corruption Unit Dismisses Widespread Speculation

The National Prosecuting Authority’s Investigating Directorate Against Corruption (IDAC) has stepped in to set the record straight after a wave of reports and social media claims suggested that several South African Police Service (SAPS) officers were facing imminent arrest.

In a clarification issued on Thursday, the NPA said much of the information circulating in recent days was inaccurate, speculative and misleading.

The intervention follows growing public interest after IDAC announced on 18 June 2026 that warrants of arrest had been authorised in connection with an ongoing matter involving senior police officials.

NPA Confirms Only Two Arrest Warrants Were Issued

According to NPA National Spokesperson Kaizer Kanyago, warrants of arrest were issued against only two SAPS members: Dumisani Khumalo and Nosipho Madondo.

Kanyago stressed that no other SAPS officials were the subject of arrest warrants.

“The two individuals were contacted by IDAC investigators to present themselves at the Brooklyn police station on 18 June 2026,” he said.

The clarification comes amid intense speculation that a broader crackdown involving multiple senior police officers was underway. Those claims have now been firmly rejected by the prosecuting authority.

Arrests Delayed Due to National Security Assignment

In a development that adds another layer to the unfolding story, IDAC revealed that the planned execution of the warrants was temporarily suspended after investigators became aware of the officers’ involvement in an important government security operation.

According to Kanyago, the two officers form part of a Justice, Crime Prevention and Security Cluster team tasked with preparing for a national security measure linked to immigration issues ahead of 30 June 2026.

After receiving this information, IDAC decided to postpone the execution of the warrants to avoid disrupting the work of the security team.

“In the interest of ensuring synergy and efficiency in the work of that team, IDAC thus decided to suspend the execution of the warrants of arrest until the assignment of the two officers is completed,” Kanyago explained.

The officers were subsequently informed that they no longer needed to hand themselves over before arriving at the Brooklyn police station.

NPA Warns Against Misinformation

The NPA has urged the public and media organisations to treat unverified claims with caution.

Kanyago reiterated that reports suggesting additional arrests within SAPS are false and have no basis in fact.

As speculation continues to spread online, the prosecuting authority has made it clear that, at this stage, only Khumalo and Madondo are linked to the warrants issued by IDAC.

Growing Public Attention

The case has attracted significant attention because it involves senior-ranking police officials and comes at a time when public scrutiny of accountability within law enforcement remains high.

While the reasons behind the warrants have not yet been disclosed publicly, the NPA’s latest statement appears aimed at preventing misinformation from overshadowing official processes.

For now, the focus remains on the two officers named by IDAC, with the execution of the warrants placed on hold until their current national security responsibilities have been completed.

The NPA has indicated that any information suggesting a wider list of SAPS officers is facing arrest should be regarded as false unless confirmed through official channels.
