Kopfontein Border Post Closed Temporarily Over Safety Concerns
Operations at the Kopfontein Port of Entry, a vital border crossing connecting South Africa and Botswana, have been temporarily suspended with immediate effect due to infrastructure challenges.
The Border Management Authority (BMA) announced the closure on Saturday, 31 October 2026, citing a major spillage that has flooded both the surrounding residential vicinity and the port’s primary operational area.
According to BMA Commissioner Dr Michael Masiapato, the decision to halt operations was made in close consultation with Botswana authorities to protect the safety of transit travellers and border officials.
Work is currently underway alongside relevant stakeholders to contain the spillage and resolve the underlying infrastructure failure.
The border post will remain closed until the area is deemed completely safe and functionally clear.
With Kopfontein out of service, the BMA has advised all motorists, logistics operators, and travellers planning to cross between South Africa and Botswana to divert to alternative land ports.
Travellers are urged to redirect their routes to the following operational ports of entry:Skilpadshek Port of Entry and Ramatlabama Port of Entry.
The BMA extended its apologies for the unavoidable inconvenience caused to the public and cross-border trade, adding that a formal update will be released as soon as Kopfontein is ready to safely resume operations.
