Jeffreys Bay Violence Case: 69 Accused Appear in Court After Anti Migrant Protest Looting
The courtroom in Humansdorp was quiet on Monday as 69 people arrested after violent unrest in Jeffreys Bay appeared briefly before the magistrate, facing allegations linked to a protest that spiralled into chaos, looting and clashes in the Ocean View community.
The accused, who face charges of trespassing and public violence, will now return to the Humansdorp Magistrate’s Court on 23 October. Their appearance follows a tense anti undocumented migrant march that ended with several spaza shops allegedly looted and residents left shaken.
The unrest erupted last Thursday after more than 1,000 residents from Ocean View and Pellsrus marched through the area to raise concerns about undocumented migrants living in the community. However, the demonstration quickly turned violent, with reports of gunshots, damaged property and attacks on local businesses.
At least 23 spaza shops in Ocean View were allegedly looted during the disorder, according to authorities. One person was injured, while several foreign nationals were relocated to temporary shelters as tensions increased and fears for their safety grew.
Police moved swiftly to stabilise the area following the unrest, maintaining a visible presence and working to recover stolen goods. Authorities also appealed to community members to remain calm and avoid further violence as investigations continued.
Of the 69 accused who appeared in court, 60 were released on warning. The remaining accused stayed in custody pending further legal proceedings.
The case has drawn attention to growing tensions around immigration, local economic concerns and community safety in parts of South Africa. While residents have raised concerns about undocumented migrants, authorities have repeatedly warned that protests must remain within the boundaries of the law and that violence and criminal acts will not be tolerated.
The October court date is expected to provide further clarity on the allegations against those accused of participating in the unrest, as investigators continue gathering evidence surrounding the events that unfolded in Jeffreys Bay.
