Hugo Broos Ends Historic Bafana Bafana Journey After Transforming South African Football

Hugo Broos has officially confirmed that his remarkable journey as Bafana Bafana head coach has come to an end, closing the chapter on one of the most successful periods in South Africa’s football history.

The 74 year old Belgian coach revealed his decision during an interview with Belgian publication Voetbalnieuws, confirming that he will leave the national team after five years at the helm.

Broos took charge of Bafana Bafana in June 2021 at a time when South African football was searching for stability and direction. Over the following years, he rebuilt the squad, restored belief among supporters and helped transform the team into one of Africa’s strongest international sides.

His tenure will be remembered for historic milestones and a renewed sense of pride around the national team.

A five year spell that changed Bafana Bafana’s fortunes

When Broos arrived, Bafana Bafana faced pressure to return to the top level of African football. The experienced coach brought discipline, tactical organisation and faith in a new generation of players.

Under his leadership, South Africa secured qualification for two consecutive Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, marking a significant period of consistency for the national side.

His biggest achievement came at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Broos guided Bafana Bafana beyond the group stage for the first time in the country’s history. The achievement created a defining moment for South African football and strengthened his legacy as one of the nation’s most influential coaches.

At the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Ivory Coast, Broos also led the team to a bronze medal finish, ending the competition among Africa’s top three nations.

Broos leaves behind a lasting legacy

Broos departs as the longest serving coach in Bafana Bafana history, having spent five years leading the national team.

His success was built around a balanced squad that combined experienced internationals with emerging talent. He gave opportunities to younger players while creating a team identity that earned respect across the continent.

For many South African supporters, his era represented a return to competitiveness after years of disappointment at major tournaments.

The Belgian coach’s departure now leaves the South African Football Association with the important task of finding a successor capable of maintaining the progress made during his tenure.

SAFA begins search for next Bafana Bafana coach

With Broos’ exit confirmed, SAFA is expected to accelerate plans to appoint a new head coach ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, which are scheduled to begin in September.

Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie has already publicly backed former Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosimane as his preferred choice to take over from Broos.

The next appointment will carry significant expectations as South Africa looks to build on the foundations created during Broos’ successful five year reign.

While his time in charge has ended, Hugo Broos leaves Bafana Bafana with a legacy of achievement, progress and renewed belief that South Africa can compete with the best teams in African football.
