Gqeberha Murder Suicide: SAPS Sergeant Allegedly Shoots Wife Before Taking Own Life
A quiet residential neighbourhood in Gqeberha was shattered by tragedy shortly after midnight when two South African Police Service (SAPS) officers were found dead inside their home in what police believe was a murder suicide.
The devastating incident has left colleagues, family members and the wider community reeling, while raising fresh concerns about domestic violence and the emotional wellbeing of those serving within the country’s police service.
According to preliminary information released by SAPS, the incident unfolded at a residence in Parsonsvlei, Gqeberha, in the Eastern Cape at approximately 00:05 on Saturday.
Police say the couple had allegedly been involved in an altercation before gunfire erupted.
When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered the bodies of a 34-year-old female police officer and her 44-year-old husband, who was also a serving SAPS member. Both had sustained gunshot wounds and were declared dead at the scene.
Initial investigations indicate that the husband allegedly shot and killed his wife before turning the firearm on himself.
The female officer was identified as a sergeant attached to Mount Road SAPS, while her husband also held the rank of sergeant and was stationed at New Brighton SAPS.
Investigators have since recovered and confiscated the firearm believed to have been used during the shooting. The exact circumstances leading up to the incident remain under investigation.
One of the most heartbreaking aspects of the tragedy is that two minor children were reportedly inside the house when the shooting occurred.
In response, SAPS has activated its Employee Health and Wellness Programme to provide counselling and emotional support to grieving family members, affected colleagues and the two children who witnessed the aftermath of the incident.
In a statement, the South African Police Service strongly condemned all forms of violence, particularly incidents involving police members who kill their intimate partners before taking their own lives.
The organisation also encouraged its members to seek professional assistance whenever they experience emotional distress or personal challenges, emphasising that support services are available.
As investigators continue piecing together the events that led to the fatal shooting, the deaths of two serving officers have once again placed the spotlight on the devastating consequences of domestic violence and the importance of early intervention when warning signs emerge.
