Five Children Die in Ikageng Shack Fire as Police Investigate Second Deadly Blaze in Two Weeks
A night of unimaginable tragedy has left the Ikageng community in mourning after five young children lost their lives in a devastating shack fire at the Sonderwater Informal Settlement. The disaster comes less than two weeks after another fatal blaze in the area claimed the lives of infant twins, raising renewed concerns about fire safety in informal settlements.
Police have opened an inquest following the incident, which claimed the lives of three girls and two boys aged between one and nine years old.
According to North West SAPS spokesperson Colonel Adéle Myburgh, emergency services were called to the scene shortly before midnight on Sunday, 19 July 2026, after reports of a shack engulfed in flames.
When officers arrived, the structure had already been completely destroyed by the fire.
Inside the burnt-out shack, police discovered the bodies of all five children. Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) confirmed each of the children had died at the scene.
A Family Torn Apart
Preliminary investigations indicate that the children’s mothers, who are sisters, had allegedly left the youngsters alone at home while they visited a nearby location.
The women were reportedly alerted by residents after the fire broke out and rushed back to the shack, where they joined community members in desperate attempts to extinguish the flames using buckets of water.
Despite their efforts, the fire spread rapidly, leaving no opportunity to save the children trapped inside.
Colonel Myburgh said three of the victims, aged one, seven and nine, were the children of one sister. The remaining two children, aged one and eight, belonged to the second sister.
Access Challenges Hampered Firefighting Efforts
Authorities said the layout of the informal settlement created major obstacles for emergency responders.
Difficult access routes significantly slowed firefighting efforts, making it harder for rescue teams to reach the burning shack in time.
The exact cause of the fire has not yet been established.
Police, together with other relevant authorities, are continuing their investigation to determine how the blaze started and whether any further action will follow.
Second Child Fatality Fire in Less Than Two Weeks
The latest tragedy follows another deadly shack fire reported in the Hashtag Informal Settlement in Ikageng less than two weeks ago.
In that incident, the charred remains of four month old twin boys were found in the wreckage after a shack was destroyed by fire on a Monday night.
The two devastating incidents have sent shockwaves through the community and renewed calls for greater awareness around fire prevention in informal settlements.

Following the tragedy, SAPS has once again appealed to residents to take extra precautions to reduce the risk of shack fires.
