JMPD Arrests 182 Drunk Drivers in One Week During Johannesburg Road Safety Crackdown
Johannesburg’s battle against drunk driving has entered another intense phase after the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) arrested 182 motorists for driving under the influence of alcohol during a week of coordinated law enforcement operations.
The arrests, made between Monday and Sunday, highlight the ongoing challenge facing authorities as they work to curb dangerous driving behaviour that continues to claim lives on the city’s roads.
The week-long operation formed part of a broader enforcement campaign involving regional units and specialised roadblocks deployed across Johannesburg. Officers targeted motorists suspected of driving while impaired, with the aim of removing them from the roads before tragedy could strike.
JMPD spokesperson Superintendent Xolani Fihla said driving under the influence remains one of the leading causes of fatal road traffic crashes in the City of Johannesburg.
He said the department’s regional and specialised units have maintained a strong presence across the city to identify and arrest impaired drivers before they endanger themselves and other road users.
“The department’s regional and specialised units have maintained high visibility to remove impaired drivers from our roads before they cause harm to themselves and other innocent road users,” Fihla said.
He praised the officers involved in the operations for continuing to enforce the law without fear or favour.
Despite the successful arrests, Fihla said the figures remain deeply concerning.
According to the department, the high number of motorists arrested suggests that many drivers continue to ignore repeated warnings, public awareness campaigns and law enforcement efforts aimed at preventing alcohol related crashes.
“The department views the high number of arrests with great concern. It indicates that despite constant enforcement, warnings and educational campaigns, many motorists still choose to disregard the law,” he said.
Authorities have reiterated that Johannesburg has zero tolerance for motorists who choose to drive while under the influence of alcohol.
Fihla confirmed that roadblocks and targeted enforcement operations will continue across all operational areas as the JMPD seeks to improve road safety and reduce preventable deaths.
The department also urged motorists to make responsible decisions before getting behind the wheel.
Drivers who intend to consume alcohol are encouraged to arrange alternative transport or use a designated driver rather than risking lives on the road.
“We appeal to all motorists to behave responsibly, exercise patience on the road, and make use of alternative transport or designated drivers if they plan to consume alcohol. Road safety is a collective responsibility,” Fihla said.
As Johannesburg continues its campaign against reckless driving, officials say sustained enforcement and public cooperation will remain essential in reducing crashes, saving lives and making the city’s roads safer for everyone.
