Mduduzi Shabalala Signs with PUMA as Kaizer Chiefs Star Ends Nike Partnership Before 2026/27 Season
Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Mduduzi Shabalala has turned the page on one chapter of his career and stepped into another after signing with global sportswear giant PUMA ahead of the 2026/27 season.
The announcement marks the end of the 22-year-old’s partnership with Nike and signals a significant personal milestone as he prepares for what could be one of the most important campaigns of his career. With Kaizer Chiefs entering a new era under head coach Fernando Da Cruz, Shabalala believes the timing could not be better.
Affectionately known by supporters as “Mdu or Die”, the gifted playmaker has been unveiled as one of the faces of PUMA’s new Ultra 7 Nitro football boots, joining an elite group of footballers representing one of the world’s biggest sportswear brands.
For Shabalala, the move is about far more than changing boots. He says it reflects the ambitions and values that continue to shape his career.
“Joining the PUMA family is the right partnership for me because I embody the same mindset that PUMA stands for, confidence, performance and the drive to win,” Shabalala said.
“As a footballer, I push myself every day to improve, compete at the highest level and make an impact on and off the pitch. I believe my ambition, work ethic and passion for the game align perfectly with the PUMA brand.”
The endorsement represents another step forward for one of Kaizer Chiefs’ brightest young talents, whose influence continues to grow both on the field and commercially.
Shabalala also revealed that teammate and close friend Mfundo Vilakazi, who already represents PUMA, played a role in introducing him to the brand.
“Seeing Mfundo Vilakazi being part of the PUMA family gave me a positive perspective on the brand,” he explained.
“We’ve spoken about his experience, but ultimately my decision was based on how well PUMA’s values, vision and commitment to athletes align with my own goals and journey as a footballer.”
Although Vilakazi’s experience offered valuable insight, Shabalala stressed that the decision was ultimately driven by his own ambitions and belief that PUMA is the right partner as he continues to develop his career.
The timing of the announcement adds extra intrigue ahead of the new Premiership campaign. Kaizer Chiefs are looking to rebuild momentum under Fernando Da Cruz, with supporters hoping the club can return to challenging consistently for major honours.
Shabalala is expected to play a central role in those ambitions. Widely regarded as one of the club’s most exciting creative midfielders, he will now begin the season wearing PUMA boots while carrying the expectations of thousands of Amakhosi supporters eager to see the club compete for silverware once again.
As preparations intensify for the 2026/27 campaign, Shabalala’s new partnership represents more than a commercial deal. It signals growing confidence in his potential and underlines his status as one of South African football’s rising stars.
