FIFA Bans Paredes for 10 Matches After Argentina World Cup Final Clash
FIFA has handed down sweeping disciplinary sanctions following the ugly scenes that erupted after Argentina’s defeat to Spain in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, with midfielder Leandro Paredes receiving a massive 10-match international suspension.
The world football governing body announced the sanctions on Friday, 21 August 2026, following its investigation into the post-match confrontation after Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in last month’s World Cup final.
Paredes has received the heaviest punishment.
The Argentina midfielder has been suspended for 10 matches and fined US$90,000 for his involvement in the confrontation.
Argentina defender Nahuel Molina has also been severely punished, receiving a seven-match suspension and a US$90,000 fine.
FIFA comes down hard after World Cup final chaos
The disciplinary action follows chaotic scenes after the final between Argentina and Spain.
Spain had just been crowned world champions when confrontations broke out between players from the two teams.
According to FIFA’s disciplinary findings reported by Reuters, Paredes was sanctioned over three assault counts arising from the incident, while Molina faced two.
Argentina midfielder Thiago Almada has received a one-match suspension and a US$30,000 fine.
Spain midfielder Gavi has also been suspended for one match and fined US$30,000 for unsporting behaviour.
Argentina assistant coach Roberto Ayala was handed a three-match suspension and fined US$30,000.
The sanctions mean several important Argentina players will now be unavailable for upcoming international fixtures.
Argentina FA hit with US$321,000 fine
The punishment extends well beyond the players.
The Argentine Football Association has been fined a total of US$321,000 following disciplinary breaches connected to incidents during the World Cup.
Those breaches include political demonstrations, discriminatory behaviour and team misconduct.
One of the most controversial incidents occurred after Argentina defeated England in the World Cup semi-final.
Argentina players displayed a banner referring to the disputed Falkland Islands, known as the Malvinas in Argentina.
The political message generated condemnation in Britain and subsequently formed part of FIFA’s disciplinary proceedings against the Argentine federation.
FIFA has also ordered that US$100,000 connected to the sanction be directed towards anti-discrimination initiatives.
Argentina faces stadium restrictions
FIFA has imposed further consequences on the reigning World Cup runners-up.
Argentina must restrict attendance at an upcoming home international to 50% of the stadium’s capacity.
A similar 50% restriction for another match has been suspended subject to a probationary period.
The measures significantly expand the consequences of the incidents beyond fines and individual player suspensions.
Argentina plans to fight FIFA sanctions
The Argentine Football Association is not accepting the decision without a challenge.
Reuters reports that the AFA intends to appeal the sanctions.
The dispute could ultimately be taken to the Court of Arbitration for Sport if Argentina fails to overturn the punishment through FIFA’s appeals process.
That means the disciplinary fallout from the 2026 World Cup may continue for months after the tournament itself ended.
Paredes faces biggest individual punishment
The 10-match suspension handed to Paredes is particularly significant.
International football offers considerably fewer matches than club football, meaning a 10-game suspension could keep a player out of national-team action for an extended period.
Molina’s seven-match punishment is similarly substantial.
The sanctions could therefore affect Argentina’s preparations and squad selections as the national team begins rebuilding following the disappointment of losing the World Cup final.
World Cup controversy refuses to disappear
Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina should have marked the conclusion of the expanded 2026 FIFA World Cup hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Instead, the aftermath has continued to generate controversy.
The post-final confrontation, political banner and subsequent FIFA investigation have now produced some of the tournament’s most significant disciplinary punishments.
Argentina’s planned appeal means the matter is far from over.
For now, however, Paredes faces 10 matches on the sidelines, Molina seven, and Argentina’s football federation is facing hundreds of thousands of dollars in fines as FIFA attempts to draw a firm disciplinary line under one of the ugliest episodes of the 2026 World Cup.
