Kaizer Chiefs may be returning to African football again next season, but club legend Brian Baloyi has warned supporters not to start acting like Naturena has won the treble.
Yes, Amakhosi are back in continental football after securing a CAF Confederation Cup spot with a third-place finish in the Betway Premiership.
But according to Baloyi, celebrating third place too wildly is exactly how standards start dropping at a giant club.
Speaking on the Soccer Beat podcast this week, the former goalkeeper delivered a brutal reality check to Chiefs fans still popping imaginary champagne bottles after Sunday’s 2-0 win over Sekhukhune United.
“You can’t be celebrating third position,” Baloyi said. “It is taking your bar too low as a club and as fans.”
Ouch. Baloyi admitted it is good to see Chiefs back in the CAF conversation again after years of struggling just to get a top-eight finish.
But he insists the Glamour Boys are still miles behind Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates.
And if the Chiefs genuinely want to catch the big boys again, difficult decisions are coming. Especially in the technical team.
Baloyi made it crystal clear that keeping co-coaches Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze should not even be up for debate.
“Chiefs need to get a top-class coach to take Chiefs back to being a top-class club,” he said.
