TS Galaxy interim coach Bernard Parker has remained humble despite crafting a master plan to stun Mamelodi Sundowns.
The KwaMhlanga side caused one of the biggest upsets of the Betway Premiership season on Tuesday night.
The Rockets produced a sensational performance at Mbombela Stadium, defeating Sundowns 3-2 and throwing the title race wide open.
Goals from Victor Letsoalo, Sedwyn George, and Mpho Mvelase sealed a famous victory for the Mpumalanga outfit. Despite a brace from Brayan León, Sundowns were unable to recover.
The result could ultimately cost Masandawana the league title, with Orlando Pirates now needing just one victory from their remaining two matches to end a 14-year wait for league glory.
Speaking after the match, Parker admitted Galaxy deliberately targeted Sundowns’ aggressive high defensive line.
“We already had an advantage because of the psychological factor we have over them,” Parker said.
The former Bafana Bafana striker explained that his side relied heavily on pace and counter-attacking football, particularly through dangerous winger Seluleko Mahlambi.
“We have been practicing on how they keep a high line,” Parker explained. “For us it was to make sure we attack the space they leave behind.”
Parker praised his players for remaining disciplined and sticking to the tactical approach throughout the game.
“Football doesn’t have answers, but solutions,” he added. “The game plan was spot on in terms of us playing according to our strengths.”
Remarkably, this was the second time this season Galaxy defeated Sundowns after previously knocking them out of the Nedbank Cup with a 2-0 victory.
Now, the title race has completely shifted in the Pirates’ favour, and Parker’s Galaxy may have just changed the course of the season.
