ANC’S NOMVULA MOKONYANE JOINS ZULU ROYAL EVENT

KWAZULU-NATAL: Senior African National Congress (ANC) leader Nomvula Mokonyane on Saturday joined King Misizulu Siqobile kaZwelithini and members of the Zulu community at a royal gathering hosted in the KwaZulu-Hobeni area, bringing together political leadership, traditional authority and communities in celebration of Zulu culture and heritage.

Mokonyane, who serves as the ANC’s First Deputy Secretary-General, was expected to engage with community members and traditional leaders during the proceedings at the royal palace.

Her attendance comes as the ANC continues to strengthen its engagement with traditional leadership and communities across the country, particularly in KwaZulu-Natal, where the institution of traditional leadership remains an important part of social and cultural life.

The royal gathering also provides an opportunity for political leaders to reaffirm the importance of respecting South Africa’s diverse cultures and traditions while promoting unity and social cohesion.

Mokonyane has previously participated in engagements involving Zulu cultural events. The ANC confirmed that she would join the KwaZulu community for the Saturday programme.

The presence of senior political figures at the event is expected to underline the relationship between democratic institutions and traditional leadership, with communities looking to both spheres of leadership to contribute towards stability, development and unity.

The occasion comes against the backdrop of heightened political and social attention on KwaZulu-Natal, making engagements between political leaders, traditional authorities and communities particularly significant.

For the ANC, Mokonyane’s participation also places emphasis on maintaining contact with communities and traditional institutions as the country heads towards the 2026 Local Government Elections.

The royal event attracted community members, traditional leaders and other dignitaries, with cultural traditions taking centre stage as the Zulu nation celebrates its heritage.
