CoGHSTA Warns Limpopo Communities as Severe Weather Threat Looms
LIMPOPO: The Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (CoGHSTA) has urged communities across Limpopo to remain vigilant as severe weather conditions are expected to affect parts of the province.
The warning follows a Yellow Level 2 weather alert issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS), with heavy downpours, thunderstorms, hail and strong, damaging winds forecast.
Authorities have cautioned that the adverse weather could result in falling trees blocking roads, localised flooding and disruptions to services, particularly where power surges occur.
The conditions could also cause damage to vehicles and structures while creating hazardous driving conditions for motorists.
Limpopo MEC for Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, Pule Shayi, has called on residents, particularly those living in high-risk areas, to take the necessary precautions.
“Residents in high-risk areas, especially in the Waterberg District, must seek shelter from hail, stay away from flooded areas and motorists must exercise maximum caution,” said Shayi.
Communities have been urged to avoid crossing flooded roads and rivers, while motorists are advised to reduce their speed, maintain a safe following distance and avoid travelling through areas affected by flooding.
The provincial disaster management centre remains on high alert and is working with sister government departments and non-governmental organisations to monitor the situation and respond to incidents arising from the adverse weather.
The weather conditions are expected to persist from Saturday evening into Sunday afternoon, with authorities urging residents to remain alert and follow official weather and safety advisories.
Residents are encouraged to report emergencies to the relevant authorities and avoid unnecessary travel during periods of severe weather.
