Didiza rejects MK Party’s call to remove Makashule Gana as impeachment committee chair
National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza has rejected the MK Party’s call for Rise Mzansi MP Makashule Gana to be removed as chair of the Section 89 Impeachment Committee.
MK parliamentary leader John Hlophe wrote to Didiza asking her to set aside Gana’s 1 June election, arguing that Rise Mzansi’s place in the GNU means Gana cannot be impartial in an inquiry into President Cyril Ramaphosa. Gana won 19–12 after being nominated by the ANC and seconded by the DA.
The request followed the committee’s decision to drop Advocate Thandazani Madonsela as evidence leader after Ramaphosa objected. The MK Party called that reversal proof the chair should be independent of the GNU.
Didiza said she has no power to overturn a vote taken by the committee itself. The ANC and DA also rejected the demand. Gana remains chair as the Phala Phala inquiry continues.
