Gagash Nonyane and wife denied bail in R6 million deceased estates case
Tshwane Metro Police Department (TMPD) officer Peter “Gagash” Nonyane and his wife, estate attorney Charlotte Tibana, have been denied bail by the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court.
Magistrate Godfrey Netshiozwi ruled today, Friday that releasing the couple posed a risk of them interfering with witnesses and the ongoing investigation. The State alleged that Tibana had already contacted complainants, witnesses, and police officials while in custody, including allegedly asking for the case to be closed.
The couple, aged 36 and 33, face 43 charges, including fraud, theft, and money laundering. The charges stem from allegations that about R6 million was unlawfully withdrawn and laundered from the bank accounts of deceased estates that Tibana had been appointed to administer.
According to the State, some of the allegedly misappropriated funds were used to finance the couple’s lifestyle, including the purchase of a Mercedes-Benz AMG G63 reportedly worth about R1.65 million. The State has also alleged that money was used for other personal expenses and property-related interests.
Nonyane was arrested in Pretoria on 14 August, while Tibana handed herself over to police in Polokwane on 17 August.
The defence had argued that the couple could comply with strict bail conditions, including reporting to police stations and providing their daily locations. The State opposed their release, citing the seriousness of the charges, the strength of its case, the ongoing investigation, and the alleged risk of witness interference.
The matter has been postponed to 6 November 2026 for further investigations. Both Nonyane and Tibana remain in custody
