A distraught family is making an urgent appeal to the public for any information regarding the whereabouts of 39-year-old skipper Jan Mokonyane, widely known as “Obakeng,” who went missing following a harrowing boating accident at Hartbeespoort Dam over a week ago.

Mokonyane vanished on Sunday, 25 October 2026, while operating a vessel on the popular North West dam.

According to details provided by his family to Missing Person South Africa, the boat Mokonyane was captaining capsized with eight passengers on board.

While emergency responders and bystanders successfully rescued all eight passengers on the day of the incident, Mokonyane was never found.

His current whereabouts remain entirely unknown, leaving his loved ones in an agonizing state of limbo.

The family has expressed deep frustration over the situation, stating they have yet to receive clear or definitive information regarding the exact circumstances that led to the vessel overturning.

They are now directly appealing to fellow boat operators, fishermen, weekend picnickers, and rescue personnel who were at the dam that Sunday to help piece together what happened.

Mokonyane is described as having a light brown complexion.

At the time of his disappearance, he was wearing a brown, two-piece ‘ESSENTIALS’ branded outfit consisting of a matching shirt and shorts.

As search efforts continue, the Mokonyane family is begging anyone who witnessed the capsizing, assisted in the initial rescue, or saw Mokonyane after the boat went under to come forward immediately.
