Tenant Sentenced to 12 Years for Raping His Landlord in Mahikeng
A night that began with an ordinary trip to a tavern ended in a horrific attack, after an 18 year old man raped his landlord at her home in Dibate Village, Mahikeng.
Katlego Setidisho was sentenced to 12 years’ direct imprisonment by the Molopo Regional Court in the North West after being convicted of rape.
The court handed down the sentence on Tuesday following the 2024 attack, which left the 23 year old victim traumatised in her own home.
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the court heard that the incident occurred on 22 March 2024.
The victim was at her residence in Dibate Village when she decided to accompany Setidisho, who was renting accommodation from her, to a tavern on Zobo Road.
After they returned from the tavern, the woman went to her bedroom to sleep.
Setidisho followed her into the room.
It was there, according to evidence presented in court, that he raped her without her consent.
The case subsequently came before the Molopo Regional Court, where Setidisho was convicted and sentenced to 12 years in prison.
Court Orders Further Restrictions
Beyond the prison sentence, the court imposed additional orders that will have long term consequences for Setidisho.
His name will be entered into the National Register for Sexual Offenders, placing him under the legal restrictions that apply to registered sex offenders.
The court also declared him permanently unfit to possess a firearm in terms of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000.
The orders reflect the seriousness with which the court treated the offence and place further legal restrictions on the convicted offender following his rape conviction.
Police Investigation Commended
The judgment was welcomed by the Ngaka Modiri Molema District Commissioner, Major General Mmatlhapi Deborah Mmolawa.
Mmolawa praised the police investigation that led to Setidisho’s conviction.
She specifically commended Detective Warrant Officer Laolang Kenneth Ntshekane of the Mmabatho Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for what she described as a meticulous investigation.
The successful prosecution brings the case to a legal conclusion more than two years after the alleged attack.
The sentence also highlights the role of specialised police units in investigating sexual offences and preparing cases for prosecution.
Setidisho will now serve his 12 year sentence, while his registration as a sexual offender and permanent firearm prohibition will remain additional consequences of his conviction.
