From World Cup heartbreak to history: Artan ready for UEFA Super Cup final
Somali referee Omar Artan is set to make history on Wednesday when he officiates the UEFA Super Cup clash.
The match is between UEFA Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain and Europa League champions Aston Villa at the Red Bull Arena in Salzburg, Austria. The appointment is a landmark moment for African football, with Artan becoming the first non-European referee ever selected to take charge of the prestigious UEFA curtain-raiser.
His selection comes through UEFA and CAF’s growing refereeing cooperation programme and is seen as recognition of his outstanding performances over the past few years. The historic appointment comes just weeks after one of the biggest disappointments of Artan’s career.
Although he had been selected to officiate at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the 34-year-old was denied entry into the United States despite holding a valid visa. He was turned away at Miami International Airport under U.S. immigration restrictions, forcing him to miss what would have been his World Cup debut.
Despite that setback, Artan refused to let the disappointment define him. He returned to officiating matches in Somalia and Kuwait while preparing for his next opportunity.
Speaking ahead of the Super Cup, he admitted the World Cup ordeal was one of the toughest moments of his career. But said the overwhelming support he received from around the world gave him the strength to continue.
Now, Artan has the chance to write a new chapter in football history as he becomes the first referee from outside Europe to officiate the UEFA Super Cup. This further cements his status as one of Africa’s leading match officials.
